Mosman 1920s Kitchen

We were tasked by the owners of this 1920's Mosman home to oversee the design and finishes as part of a large-scale renovation. Taking the home's original terrazzo thresholds and tiling as the inspiration for the colour and materials palette, and drawing on our client's love of strong, earthy colours, we developed a scheme of matt black joinery, terrazzo and warm oak to create a moody and sophisticated space whilst still being relaxed enough to suit the style of this family home.

The oversized terrazzo island bench was a natural choice to bring texture and an organic softness to the darker palette. Warm timber joinery provides a deliberate contrast to the matt black upper joinery above, the two materials grounding each other without competing. We also made the conscious decision to run a full wall of tiling with no upper cabinets, providing a light relief to the darker tones and allowing the brass rangehood to become the hero of the space.

The brass accents and trio of oversized pendants provide a lovely contrast to the organic colours throughout. The result is a kitchen that works hard for its busy family owners whilst adding a dramatic focal point to the home.
