Established in the early nineteenth century as a hub for shipbuilding, by 1872 its dockyard was the largest in New South Wales, and that working-class maritime past still shapes the streets today, narrow lanes of Victorian terraces and cottages leading down to a waterfront now dotted with parks, wharves and a bustling high street of cafes, pubs and boutique shops. Strict heritage controls limit large-scale redevelopment, which protects the suburb's character but makes considered renovation, rather than replacement, the natural way to improve a Balmain home.
