Cammeray has a quality that is easy to overlook on first encounter and hard to forget once you have spent time there: a village-like intimacy combined with the established calm of a suburb that has not been entirely remade. Its residential streets are lined with period homes, Federation and Californian bungalows, and the occasional contemporary infill, all of which bring their own design vocabulary and their own set of opportunities.

Emily Webster, principal designer at The Style Workshop (TSW), has worked with Cammeray clients across a range of project types, from kitchen and living renovations in Federation homes to full-home design packages for families who have bought into the suburb and want to settle into it properly. The character stock here rewards a sympathetic approach: decisions that acknowledge the existing architecture while making room for contemporary living.

Period homes in particular are an area of genuine interest for TSW. There is a pleasure in the challenge of introducing current material palettes and furniture into spaces with original cornices, architraves and floorboards, without making either the old or the new feel out of place. Done well, the result is a home with depth and distinctiveness that a new build can rarely replicate.

The most common brief in Cammeray is a renovation that needs to honour the building while also working for the way a family actually lives: open plan or semi-open, with indoor-outdoor connection, enough storage, and a material palette that is both durable and considered.
