Paddington is one of Sydney's most cohesive and carefully preserved heritage suburbs. Its rows of Victorian terraces, with their ornate cast iron lacework, sandstone details and symmetrical facades, march down hillsides and turn corners along tree-lined streets in a way few other suburbs can match. It was the first suburb in Australia to be classified by the National Trust, and that heritage conservation status protects the streetscapes that make Paddington so distinctive today. Around Oxford Street and Five Ways, a village atmosphere of independent galleries, boutiques and cafes gives the suburb its enduring character.
Emily Webster, principal designer at The Style Workshop, has spent 17 years working with residential clients across Sydney's heritage-rich premium suburbs. While the studio is based in nearby Mosman, its work regularly extends into Paddington and the wider Eastern Suburbs, bringing the same close attention to period detail and material honesty that these terraces deserve.
The approach at TSW is built on restraint and intention. Every design decision is made in service of the client's brief and the character of the home itself, never for the sake of decoration. The result is a space that feels considered, personal and entirely at home on its street.
Renovating a Paddington terrace means working within heritage conservation controls that protect the iron lacework, sandstone detailing and facades that give the suburb its identity. Inside, the brief is usually different: opening up dark, narrow floorplans, adding the storage and living space modern family life demands, and doing it in a way that respects, rather than fights, the home's original bones.
Terrace floorplans bring their own practical questions too: narrow footprints, party walls that limit natural light, and small rear courtyards that need to work harder for both entertaining and everyday life. Getting the material and colour palette right in these conditions requires real experience with how light behaves in a terrace, not a generic renovation playbook.
The Style Workshop manages all of this through a thorough discovery phase, a clear design concept, and a considered refinement process, resulting in a Paddington home that honours its history while feeling entirely ready for the way you live now.
