What Determines the Cost of Interior Design in Sydney
Every quote comes back to the same handful of variables. The scope of the project matters most: a single room refresh is a very different undertaking to a whole-home renovation involving multiple trades. The level of documentation required also plays a part, a fully resolved finishes schedule that a builder can quote from takes considerably more time than a mood board and shopping list.
Procurement is another factor. If you want your designer sourcing and managing furniture, fixtures and finishes through trade-only suppliers, that is a genuinely different service to a design concept you go on to shop and install yourself. Heritage considerations, site complexity, and how hands-on you want your designer to be during installation all affect the final figure too.
Common Pricing Models
Interior designers in Sydney generally charge in one of three ways, and it is worth understanding each before you start comparing quotes.
Hourly rates suit open-ended or evolving projects where the scope is hard to pin down in advance. Our own hourly rate is $275 incl. GST, with travel beyond 30 minutes each way charged at $137/hr incl. GST.
Fixed-fee packages give you cost certainty from the outset. You know exactly what is included and exactly what you will pay before any work begins, which is why most of our clients choose this route.
Procurement margins apply specifically to the furniture, finishes and trade items a designer sources on your behalf, typically a percentage added to trade pricing. Ours is 15%, and it is always disclosed upfront before anything is purchased.

We work almost exclusively on a fixed-fee package basis, because it gives clients clarity from the very first conversation. Here is what each package includes.

All prices include GST. Most clients begin with the Initial Consultation, which gives you a clear, written direction for your space and helps you decide how much further support you actually need.

What's Included and What's Additional
Our package fees cover the design work itself, concept development, documentation, and our time. They do not include the cost of the furniture, finishes or trades themselves, those are quoted separately and always shown to you before any commitment is made.
For custom items and larger procurement, we ask for a 50% deposit upfront with the balance due prior to delivery, and the same 50/50 structure applies across project stages more broadly. It is also worth noting that every contract for trades, suppliers or contractors is entered into directly between you and that provider, not through The Style Workshop, so you retain full visibility and control over who you are engaging.
Is Hiring an Interior Designer Worth the Investment?
Most clients recover the cost of good design many times over, simply by avoiding the expensive mistakes that come from guessing: the sofa that does not fit, the paint colour that reads completely differently once it is on the wall, the joinery that looks wrong the moment it is installed. A designer's trade relationships also mean you are often paying less for individual pieces than you would at retail, even after a procurement margin is applied.
Beyond the financial case, the value is in the outcome itself: a home that feels considered rather than assembled, and the time saved not having to research, source and coordinate everything yourself. For most of our clients, that combination is what makes the investment worthwhile.
